What does WDO mean?

WDO means wood destroying organisms. Wood destroying organisms can be mold or fungi; and can also be termites, bees, ants, and powder post beetles. When you have an inspection by a pest control company, they will look for evidence of wood destroying organisms in your home, or past damage that needs to be repaired. In Florida, we have a variety of WDO's that are common to our area, and they are a very serious issue that causes billions worth of damage in the U.S. each year. Your pest control company can identify treatment methods for your home to prevent WDO damage from insects.

If the problem is from dry rot or a fungus, a home inspector or contractor can identify the cause and a method for remediation. The cause is for this type of WDO will be from moisture issues such as untreated wood too close to the ground, or door frames and window sills in direct contact with water.

How to identify WDO issues

Wood Rot

WDO from rot or fungus is often found at the bottom of wood siding, windows sills, roof fascia, and at the bottom of door frames and siding trim. A screwdriver will easily push through with light pressure. If the problem is in a small area, we can repair it with a structural wood filler. In many cases, we replace the wood and take measures to prevent wood rot from coming back.

Termites

Mud tubes can be found at the foundation, baseboards, window sills, walls, or wood floors. Swarming termites can be spotted in the spring and fall. Thousands of winged termites fly from nests, often in the home where the look to build a new colony. They look like ants with wings. Termites can enter an attic, crawlspace, or can get behind the siding of your home. If your home has a crawlspace, you may find springy sections of flooring, or holes in the wood of the floor or sub-floor. Termites also like to eat paper products and softwoods. Some areas of the house may have a collection of old wings or droppings in an area where there may be termites.

Ants

You may find ants foraging for food in your home. Winged ants in your home is a sign that the colony is well established and looking for other areas to start a new colony. Ants make nests and leave behind wood shavings that will indicate that a nest is nearby.

Powder Post Beetles

Powder post beetles can inhabit wood framing in your home. The wood will have small holes in it. If you tap on the wood, wood powder will fall out of the holes. The wood feels like cardboard. We replace any boards with powder post beetles.

Carpenter Bees

Carpenter bees look similar to bumble bees in appearance. They bore into wood frequently in eves and soffits.
